Please help me with advice on how to improve my credit score!?

My FICO score with equifax is 617. At this moment i have 2 revolving credit cards, 2 paid collections (1 year ago), 1 rrsp loan ($5000) 2 student loans that I am not paying because i am at school. How bad is my score and what type of credit I can still get. How long do you think it will take for me to reach 700 points if I keep my balances low and make all payments on time? Thanks for answering my question. I know the score is not too bad, but as it stands now, i can only qualify for store charge cards. How many points do you think i should have before I can even start thinking about applying for a regular credit card?

2. It all depends, Now if you can make your way to a bank and get a secured loan fro 200$ pay it back earlier than agreed, then turn around and do it again, This will boost your credit faster than any other alternative. Thank me later.
3. I agree with Ian. By establishing a few more lines of credit, you will improve your score. This can easily be done by getting a small loan (for an appliance, tv, etc...) and pay it back within 6 months. Then do it again. In the meantime: 1) Work ok paying off your existing loans. 2) See if you can get those two collections removed. This can be done by either disputing them with the credit bureau, or politely asking the collection agent to help you out, since you did pay them back (good luck with this one though....) 3) See if your credit card companies will raise your credit limit a little bit. This will improve your debt/credit ratio.
4. Keep paying everything on time. See if the collections that have been paid can be removed from the report. Your credit score is not bad. Pay off the revolving debt but keep the credit lines open. If you have a job, make minimum payements on your student loans....it shows a good faith effort on your part. Good Luck!
