How do I better my bad credit score?

I have bad credit, I let someone borrow money from two of my credit cards and they stop paying them for like 3 months.( how irresponsible of me, i know) I had to start an account with one of the debt consolidators to make one single payment a month on both those credit cards, the interest for nonpayment where so high my payment on every card was like $500 a month, ridiculous! Now I have a really bad credit score. How do i fix this?
